Student Opportunities

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) provides year-round opportunities for law students interested in working for New Mexico’s largest and most dynamic public law office. The number of positions available depends upon current needs and available funding. Law clerks at the OAG often have diverse legal interests and may have the opportunity to work in a variety of different legal fields, including: administrative law, civil litigation and appeals, consumer protection, criminal prosecution and appeals, environmental protection and utilities law, Medicaid fraud, and other various areas of law and policy.

During the fall and spring academic semesters students may work in the office as volunteer clerks or through an externship to receive school credit. Those interested in an opportunity to receive school credit should discuss logistics with their academic and career service advisers. While the office works to house most semester positions in Albuquerque, it is possible that occasional travel to the Santa Fe office may be required.

The OAG’s summer law clerk program is focused on providing meaningful, substantive experience for particularly motivated law students. In addition to unique hands-on work experience the office provides law clerks with opportunities to engage in group discussions related to work in the office, speakers invited to share practical experience, social opportunities, and other activities to supplement their summer work experience. The office may provide a limited number of full-time paid summer law clerk positions as well as a limited number of unpaid volunteer or externship positions.
