Immigrant Services
While immigration policy is largely a federal issue, New Mexico Attorney General
King helps ensure that state laws are followed and immigrants are not treated unfairly
or unlawfully after their entry into New Mexico. The immigrant community of
New Mexico deserves protection of its basic rights as consumers and residents.
The Immigrant Consumer Services Unit addresses issues such as immigrant-targeted
consumer problems and other civil matters particularly when the immigrant is a target
for abuse.
Services also include protections for immigrants who have been victimized by those
who illegally practice law without a license and often call themselves “immigration
consultants” or a “notary public.”
OUR SERVICES DO NOT INCLUDE IMMIGRATION ASSISTANCE.
In recent years, the state’s policy on land development has resulted in county
regulations to prevent the further development of “colonias,” or developments
lacking basic infrastructure. Keeping an eye for loopholes and supporting a
solid enforcement system is well within the Attorney General’s authority and
interest.
The office of Attorney General Gary King is a public office that functions with
the taxes from all of its residents and therefore does not charge for these services.
