Scams and Consumer Advisories


The Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office receives thousands of inquiries annually. Numerous consumers call the Consumer Protection Division to report various scams or frauds or what appear to be fraudulent schemes. The scam alerts and consumer advisories listed below advise consumers to be cautious when receiving an unsolicited offer. As potential scams and frauds are reported to our office, this page will be updated.

If you encounter a scam or fraud, please report it to the Consumer Protection Division by calling 800-678-1508 or send an email to comm...(click to show)...@nmag.gov. If you are forwarding a scam email, please be sure to attach the message's Internet headers. Learn how to find Internet headers.

Money AG King: Summer Travel Scam Alert

Attorney General Gary King wants New Mexicans to be wary of discount travel companies passing through our state offering Summer vacation deals that sound too good to be true. The AG’s Office has received information that at least one out of state company offering “free” airline tickets and car rental is currently operating in the Santa Fe area. The problem is…the tickets and car rental are not really “free.”

Computer and Mouse Scam Alert: Possible Fraudulent Activity on Craig’s List

New Mexico consumers have alerted the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office of possible fraudulent activity on Craig’s List involving ads for home lease/rentals as well as vehicle and television sales.

New Mexico with Rainbow NEW MEXICO LOTTERY Scam

Internet users may find a new twist on an old lottery scam waiting to be opened in their inboxes. The “WINNING NOTIFICATION” states it’s from the “New Mexico Sweetpstakes.” The email message begins, “The prestigious New Mexico Sweepstakes and aol has set out and successfully organised a Sweepstakes marking the our 60th anniversary we rolled over Two Million US Dollars for our end of year Anniversary Draws.”

Woman on Phone “FRAUD DIVISION” SCAM

The latest telephone scam is currently being reported in the Albuquerque area. The scam involves a call from an individual posing as a representative from “The Fraud Division.”
