(ALBUQUERQUE)---Attorney General Gary King is asking Senators in Washington to pass pending legislation that would prohibit illegal online and mail-order tobacco sales.

"Fifty-one of my colleagues in the National Association of Attorneys General signed and sent a letter to each member of the Senate asking them to help snuff out illegal cigarette sales to underage youth, and allow the states to collect taxes on Internet and by-mail sales of tobacco products," says AG King.

The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) sent the letter last night urging Senators to pass the “Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act of 2009” (PACT Act; S.1147) would curb the delivery of cigarettes reaching underage youth, and bring state revenue by collecting state and local taxes on Internet sales of tobacco products, among other things.

AG King adds, "The PACT Act, while curtailing illegal activities of purveyors of contraband cigarettes where the final point of sale is to non-tribal members in other states, does not affect the important principle of tribal sovereignty. I think that provision is of special concern here in New Mexico."

Fifty-one Attorneys General signed the NAAG letter. The Association has supported the PACT Act since 2003. In this Congress, the House passed it last May.
